feeding a 21 month old RE: Feedback via the Ask Health Query to Dr SK. Get answered for free.

Detailed Query: My grandson is 21 months old. Some of his teeth are already in his mouth. He is on breast feeding even now but he is not getting sufficient milk from that. Since last 10 months he is being given some outside milk or semisolid food but in different way. Actually he never tries to taste or eat the food from his mouth himself. He tries to keep his mouth closed and takes away his mouth as far as possible, whenever he observes that something is approaching towards his mouth. In response to it his mother grabs him, put him in her lap in laying position, encircle his feet and hands from her one leg and then pushes approx 150 ml of the milk, semisolid food especially paste of boiled rice and pulse, in his mouth forcibly with help of a spoon, 3/4 times daily. In this process my grandson keeps on crying loudly with tears in eyes and trying to escape from her mother\'s tight grip. Sometimes he vomits also whatever was pushed in his mouth forcefully. The scene is really pathetic. This has become a regular scene while feeding him. Child is normal otherwise. He asks to drink water and drinks it as normal child. He takes one/two pieces of chapati or salted dalmonth in his mouth. Only problem is, he does not accept to eat or drink anything other than water. He actually confirms it by looking in the glass that there is nothing else than water. He is afraid of spoon if it comes near his mouth. We are not stopping this practice due to fear that if he was not given any food he will became weaker. Please advise us how to feed this child? Please help in this regard. We will remain obliged to you for the kind suggestion. Visitor Ip: 59.95.67.125

HE should not be breast feeding by this age for more than one feed per day.
Also do not encourage outside or top milk at this age as it may kill the appetite.
He will try to eat ifg new food items are introduced with uniform consistency slowly and gradually, initially in very small quantities and increased daily initially in frequency and then in quantity.
Its very likely that he doesnt chew the feeds as he isnt aware how to. Train him to chew the food when held in mouth. if you use a small spoon to feed, the kid may not keep his mouth tight. Also he being more curious its important to divert him into some acitivity while feeding.
The food should not be given in lying down posture and it should not be forced in large quantities. All children get hungry, but when they realise feeding is not their job, they will behave passive with feeding.
feed slow for longer time rather than forcing in minutes. try to understand baby has some desires, needs, curisity , understandings, fear etc. he will cooperate when u show a CARING ATTITUDE AND SPEND LOTS TIME. as he accepts water easily concentrate on making the feeds watery in beginning with energy rich supplements. add tastes and colours of minced / pureed fruits and vegetables. introduce non transparent water bottles and Give water in a sipper so he may not realise the colour change.
what is his weight? if it is adequate say 10 kg for 21 months, i wont be much worried. currently yoiur prime need is to taper milk as much possible. please visit the site for detailed answer.
